Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp in Denmark amid reports of growing tensions with head coach Jorge Jesus, just ahead of the team’s UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark. The 41-year-old captain announced his departure on Wednesday after a series of developments surrounding his role in the squad.
The situation intensified after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. Jesus had indicated that Ronaldo could feature as a substitute, but ultimately decided not to bring him onto the pitch. Ronaldo subsequently trained separately from the squad over the following days.
Speaking to reporters before Portugal’s training session in Copenhagen, Jesus denied that there had been a major confrontation with Ronaldo. The coach said Ronaldo had been disappointed about not playing against Norway but insisted that there had been no serious incident between them.
However, shortly after Jesus’s press conference, Ronaldo left the training camp. He later confirmed his decision through a post on Instagram, saying that he had spoken with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before deciding to depart. Ronaldo added that he would explain the reasons for his decision to Portuguese supporters “in due course.”
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo’s departure and said preparations for the upcoming matches would continue with the remaining members of the squad. Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark before hosting Norway in their next Nations League fixture.
Ronaldo’s departure has also raised questions about his future with the national team. He remains Portugal’s record international goalscorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances. The veteran forward has previously indicated that the current stage of his career could be approaching its final chapter, although he has not announced his retirement from international football.
For now, the exact reason behind Ronaldo’s decision to leave remains unclear. While reports have linked the development to his reduced playing role under Jesus, the coach has rejected suggestions of a major rift, and Ronaldo has said he will provide his own explanation at a later stage.
