Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand on Thursday revealed that improving communication between local authorities and residents remains critical.
The local government minister noted that part of her ministry’s focus is ensuring local officials understand the rules and systems that guide local governance, while also communicating those processes clearly to residents.

Minister Manickchand made the remarks during an interview on the Guyana Dialogue programme. She highlighted the importance of ensuring Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs), and community representatives have the necessary information to engage and respond to citizens’ needs.
She emphasised that stronger collaboration is needed between all stakeholders involved in delivering services at the community level.
The minister explained that education, clearer guidelines and improved communication channels are key areas being addressed.

The minister also said the use of technology is an important tool for improving engagement. She noted that local authorities must take advantage of platforms that allow them to communicate more effectively with residents.
“We are dealing with large numbers of persons, and we have to bring them on board,” Minister Manickchand said.
She highlighted that some officials are being encouraged to use digital platforms such as social media to share information with communities and keep residents updated on local matters.
