In keeping with the commitment to modernise Guyana’s transport infrastructure and improve connectivity, the government has moved to the bidding stage for the construction of the Alternative Bypass Route for the West Coast Demerara traffic from Tuschen to Ruimzeight.

The Ministry of Housing and Water, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA), has invited sealed bids from eligible contractors for 13 lots under the transformative road project.

The project will be procured through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) process in accordance with the Procurement Act 2003.

Interested contractors can obtain bidding documents from June 30, 2026, with bids scheduled to close on July 13, 2026.

The construction period for each lot is estimated at eight months. A pre-bid site visit has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in the parking lot of the National Track and Field Facility at Leonora.

The bypass road forms part of the government’s wider strategy to ease traffic congestion along the West Coast Demerara corridor while supporting continued housing and economic expansion in Region Three.

    Road upgrades in Region Three

The advancement follows significant investments outlined in the 2026 Budget, which allocated $14.7 billion for Region Three’s development programme.

As part of that investment, some $123 million was approved for the construction of several bridges, and an additional $493 million was approved for public works across the region, including $100 million for road rehabilitation, improving access for hundreds of residents.

The bypass route is expected to play a critical role in improving traffic flow, reducing travel times and supporting continued residential, commercial and industrial development along the West Demerara corridor.
