Jamaican Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness and his delegation visited the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Friday, where they were introduced to Guyana’s expanding use of advanced medical technology, including the country’s FREEDOM60 robot.
The Mantra Freedom60 is a pioneering robotic surgery system.
The Jamaican prime minister was accompanied by Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, GPHC Chief Executive Officer Robbie Rambarran and other senior health officials during the tour.
The delegation received an overview of the hospital’s growing investment in technology aimed at improving patient care and expanding access to specialised medical services.
Among the highlights was the Mantra Freedom robotic surgical system, which placed Guyana at the centre of global medical innovation after it was used to perform what has been described as the world’s longest-distance robotic heart surgery across continents.
The robotic platform enables surgeons to carry out minimally invasive procedures through small incisions, reducing pain, lowering the risk of infection and allowing patients to recover more quickly than with conventional surgery.
The visit formed part of the Jamaican prime minister’s wider programme in Guyana and highlighted growing cooperation between the two Caribbean nations, including in the field of healthcare.
