Region Seven is set to benefit from an estimated $5.6 billion in investment this year as the government continues to advance infrastructure, healthcare, education and community development programmes across the region.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr Josh Kanhai

This is according to the Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr Josh Kanhai, who explained on Sunday that the investment programme focus remains on improving access and creating better opportunities for residents of the region.

Speaking on the Starting Point Podcast, Dr Kanhai pointed to ongoing and planned works, including road upgrades, improved water access, healthcare expansion and education initiatives as key areas of development.

He noted that several communities that previously relied on basic road networks have already seen improvements, with additional projects planned for areas including Monkey Mountain and other communities.

Meanwhile, the REO said steps are also being taken to strengthen accountability and ensure government investments deliver value for money.

He explained that standard operating procedures (SOPs) will be introduced across departments, particularly in areas such as contract management, engineering and project monitoring.

Dr Kanhai explained that the move is aimed at addressing delays in project implementation and creating clearer responsibilities for officers and contractors involved in government projects.

“Once you sign on, you are now held liable to comply with those standard operating procedures,” Dr Kanhai said, adding that stronger monitoring systems will help improve efficiency and ensure projects are completed as planned.

Residents will also play a greater role in monitoring projects within their communities, allowing them to have better oversight and participate in the development process.
