Austria made a winning return to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence, overcoming a spirited Jordan side 3-1 in an entertaining Group J clash on Wednesday morning. While the final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory, the match was far more competitive than Austria had anticipated as World Cup debutants Jordan pushed them all the way.

The Austrians started brightly and took the lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, whose powerful strike gave his side an early advantage. Austria appeared to be in control during the opening stages, but Jordan refused to back down and continued to threaten with quick counterattacks and energetic pressing.

Jordan’s determination paid off shortly after halftime when Ali Olwan etched his name into the history books by scoring his country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal. His superb finish stunned the Austrian supporters and injected fresh belief into the tournament newcomers. The equalizer transformed the match into a tense battle as both teams searched for a decisive breakthrough.

Austria thought they had regained the lead midway through the second half when veteran striker Marko Arnautovic found the net. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out due to a handball in the build-up, leaving the score level and the tension rising.

The turning point finally arrived in the 76th minute. A dangerous Austrian corner created chaos inside the Jordan penalty area, and defender Yazan Al-Arab accidentally diverted the ball into his own net. The unfortunate own goal restored Austria’s lead and shifted momentum firmly in their favor.

Jordan continued to fight bravely in search of another equalizer, but Austria’s experience began to show as the match entered stoppage time. Arnautovic eventually got his goal from the penalty spot after a handball decision went against Jordan. The experienced forward calmly converted to seal a 3-1 victory and ensure Austria’s successful return to football’s biggest stage.

Despite the defeat, Jordan earned widespread praise for their fearless performance. The debutants matched Austria for long periods and demonstrated that they are capable of competing with established football nations. Their attacking intent and resilience suggest they could still have a major say in the outcome of Group J.

For Austria, the three points provide the perfect start to their World Cup campaign. However, tougher challenges lie ahead, including a blockbuster encounter against defending champions Argentina. Coach Ralf Rangnick’s side will be pleased with the result but aware that significant improvements will be needed against stronger opposition.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to deliver drama and excitement, Austria’s return to the global stage has begun with victory, while Jordan have already won many admirers with a performance full of courage, determination, and promise.
