The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has strengthened its operational capacity, with 107 new firefighters who completed the Basic Recruitment Course #1 of 2026.

The recruits graduated during a ceremony on Friday, following four months of intensive training designed to prepare them for service in communities nationwide.

Several graduates reflected on their experiences during the programme, highlighting the discipline, resilience and sense of duty instilled throughout the training.

    Fire woman Adina Santo Silva

Adina Santo Silva from Region Seven described the course as challenging but rewarding.

“Last year, I was given the opportunity to train with the Guyana Fire Service. My experience was a tough one, but to be honest, I enjoyed every bit of it with our instructors,” Silva said.

She expressed appreciation for the guidance the trainers provided and encouraged young people to consider joining the GFS.

“I am very appreciative of all the work they have put into us and the discipline they have shown us over the past four months. If I am to recommend the Guyana Fire Service to the younger generation of females or males, I would say go for it,” she added.

    Fire woman Kelsey Williams

Kelsey Williams from Region Two said the graduation marked the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.

“I am the first firewoman from the Pomeroon River. I have always wanted to become a firefighter, and today that dream has finally become a reality,” she said.

She added, “It has helped me to become a better person. It has helped me with my discipline and helped me to think strategically so that I could be good at my job, save lives and also serve my country and my community.”

Williams thanked the government and the GFS for providing the opportunity to pursue her career goals.

Sean John from Mahdia in Region Eight also spoke of the impact the training had on him.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to join the Guyana Fire Service because, being here for the past four months, I have learned a lot,” he said.

    Fireman Sean John

John noted that the course strengthened his discipline and expressed gratitude to his family, instructors and the government for supporting his journey.

The new firefighters are expected to be deployed across Guyana, bolstering the fire service’s ability to respond to emergencies and enhance public safety nationwide.
