THE Government is advancing its housing development programme in Region Six, with construction underway on another 210 homes at Palmyra as efforts continue to expand access to affordable homeownership for families and young professionals.
The latest phase comprises 110 three-bedroom flat houses specifically designed for young professionals and another 100 three-bedroom bungalow homes, adding to the growing residential development in the area.
During a visit to the construction site, Minister of Housing Collin Croal said the Government’s approach is increasingly focused on delivering completed houses rather than limiting its housing programme to the distribution of residential lots.
He explained that providing finished homes allows beneficiaries to move directly into homeownership without having to undertake the entire construction process themselves.
The 110 young professional flat houses are being offered at a construction cost of $19.5 million each, while the three-bedroom bungalow units are priced at $13 million.
According to the minister, the homes are being sold strictly at construction cost, with no additional profit being applied, as part of the Government’s efforts to make homeownership more accessible to different income groups.
Applications are currently open to eligible beneficiaries and other interested individuals who are already registered in the national housing system.
Prospective applicants can visit the Region Six Housing Office, where they will undergo screening and receive referrals to financial institutions for prequalification.
Croal further noted that applicants’ income levels will be carefully assessed to determine which housing category best matches their financial capacity. This, he explained, will help ensure that the programme accommodates individuals and families across varying income brackets.
Beyond expanding the housing stock, the development is also contributing to employment and economic activity within the region.
Approximately 50 contractors are currently involved in constructing the homes, with many of them drawn from Region Six, creating opportunities for local businesses, skilled workers and other construction professionals.
The continued expansion of Palmyra reflects the Government’s broader housing strategy to establish well-developed residential communities while giving more Guyanese the opportunity to secure completed homes at affordable prices.
