The Beharry Group of Companies Schools U-19 Cricket Tournament continues to gain momentum across Guyana, with schools in Zone Two (Regions One and Two) now fully focused on the upcoming quarter-final stage of the competition. As anticipation builds for what is expected to be one of the country’s most significant school cricket tournaments, players, teachers and officials have completed preparations. They are eagerly awaiting the start of the knockout round.
A major step in the preparation process was the successful hosting of a team briefing last Friday, which brought together teachers, student-athletes and tournament officials to discuss arrangements for the highly anticipated competition. The session formed part of the organisers’ efforts to ensure participating schools are fully informed and prepared as the tournament enters its most competitive phase.
Lead Coordinator and former Guyana Under-15 player Azizi Christiani welcomed the gathering and thanked the teachers and students for their commitment and enthusiasm. He emphasised the tournament’s role in providing young cricketers with opportunities to develop their skills, gain valuable competitive experience and showcase their abilities on a wider platform.
Christiani noted that school cricket remains one of the most effective ways to identify future talent and to nurture the next generation of national players. He encouraged participants to embrace the opportunity the tournament offers and to represent their schools with pride and discipline.
Recently appointed Guyana Under-19 Assistant Coach Antony Adams was among those attending the briefing and praised the Beharry Group of Companies for its investment in youth development through sport. Adams said initiatives such as the Schools U-19 Tournament play a critical role in strengthening the cricketing pathway and in giving talented young players opportunities to be seen by selectors and coaches.
Drawing on his own experiences as a cricketer, Adams reflected on the important role school cricket played in his development and progression in the sport. He urged young players to make the most of every opportunity available to them, reminding them that strong performances at school level can open doors to regional and national representation.
The briefing also included an interactive session, during which schools were invited to raise questions, seek clarification on tournament matters and share suggestions with organisers. Representatives expressed appreciation for the initiative and welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with tournament officials ahead of the quarter-final stage.
With the briefing exercise successfully completed, schools have signalled their readiness to take the field in pursuit of a place in the semi-finals. The quarter-final matches are scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, and are expected to deliver exciting contests as teams battle for advancement in the competition.
At the Sheba Ground, Waramuri will face Santa Rosa in a highly anticipated clash starting at 10:30 hrs. Meanwhile, the Joe Jagmohan Ground will host two quarter-final matches, with Charity taking on Anna Regina from 09:30 hrs., followed by Cotton Field facing Abram Zuil in the afternoon fixture at 13:30 hrs.
The remaining quarter-final match will be held at the Pomona Ground, where Johanna Cecilia will face Aurora from 10:30 hrs. With all four matches carrying semi-final implications, supporters can expect intense competition and spirited performances from some of the country’s most promising young cricketers.
Beyond the excitement of the matches themselves, the Beharry Group of Companies Schools U-19 Cricket Tournament remains an important platform for youth development, helping to strengthen the foundation of school cricket throughout Guyana. The tournament not only promotes sporting excellence but also fosters teamwork, discipline, leadership and personal growth among participants.
As the quarter-final stage approaches, excitement continues to build across Regions One and Two, with schools eager to make their mark in a competition that has quickly established itself as a valuable contributor to the development of cricket in Guyana.
