Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received widespread praise after he reportedly thwarted an attack by his co-pilot during a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, an incident that placed the aircraft and its passengers in a potentially dangerous situation.
According to reports, Machchhar was injured during the confrontation but continued to respond to the emergency. The incident occurred while the flight was in the air, with reports saying the co-pilot attacked him with a knife and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The flight subsequently issued an emergency alert and descended significantly as the situation unfolded.
The crisis was eventually brought under control after passengers, including security personnel and air marshals, helped subdue the attacker. Reports have credited Machchhar’s actions with helping prevent a potentially serious outcome involving the approximately 180 people aboard the flight.
Machchhar sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates. India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, visited him and his family at the hospital and said the pilot was in stable condition and recovering.
The incident has also drawn attention from senior political leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Machchhar on Friday and heard his account of what happened during the flight. Modi praised the pilot’s actions and wished him a speedy recovery.
During the conversation, Machchhar reportedly explained what gave him courage during the attack. According to reports, he told the Prime Minister that his focus remained on the safety of the people aboard the aircraft. Other reports said he was reciting the Hanuman Chalisa during the ordeal.
The incident has triggered international attention because of the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation and the possibility of a hijacking attempt. Reports said Israeli authorities were sufficiently concerned about the situation to scramble fighter aircraft as the flight was heading toward Israel.
While investigations into the incident continue, Captain Smit Machchhar’s condition remains a key focus. Officials have said he is stable and receiving treatment, while the Indian Embassy remains in contact with the relevant authorities.
The episode has placed Machchhar at the centre of international attention, with officials and the public highlighting his conduct during a highly stressful in-flight emergency. The full circumstances surrounding the attack, including the co-pilot’s actions and the sequence of events inside the cockpit, are expected to become clearer as authorities continue their investigation.
