On Friday, President Dr Irfaan Ali joined members of the Indian High Commission in Guyana and representatives of the Brahma Kumaris to mark Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrating the enduring bond between brothers and sisters.
The observance offered an opportunity to reflect on the values of love, respect, protection and mutual support at the heart of the festival. Raksha Bandhan is traditionally marked by sisters tying a sacred thread, or Rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of affection and a commitment to their well-being.
The brothers, in turn, reaffirm their promise to stand by and support their sisters, often presenting gifts as a gesture of appreciation and love.
President Ali’s participation underscored the importance of cultural traditions in strengthening family ties and promoting values that foster a more caring and united society.
The celebration with representatives of the Indian diplomatic mission and the Brahma Kumaris also underscored Guyana’s rich cultural diversity and the continued observance of traditions that are an important part of the nation’s social fabric.
