President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has held high-level discussions with United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington, D.C., aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and attracting greater American investment into Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, focused on investment opportunities across several strategic sectors, including oil and gas exploration, infrastructure development, agriculture, housing, technology and digital transformation.
In a statement published on his official Facebook page, President Ali disclosed that Secretary Lutnick reaffirmed Washington’s strong interest in expanding American investments in Guyana, recognising the country as an important economic partner with considerable potential for growth and prosperity in the Americas.
A major focus of the discussions was renewed investment in oil and gas exploration, alongside infrastructure expansion and improved transportation connectivity. These initiatives are expected to strengthen Guyana’s economic competitiveness and support its emergence as a regional centre for international business and commerce.
President Ali emphasised that continued investment in modern infrastructure and connectivity would help position Guyana as a strategic gateway for trade between the Caribbean and the wider South American continent.
Agriculture and housing development were also prominent on the agenda, with both leaders examining opportunities for greater American participation in these sectors.
The Guyanese Head of State highlighted the importance of leveraging American expertise, investment and technology to modernise agricultural production, strengthen regional food security and accelerate housing development.
According to President Ali, such cooperation could generate employment, expand economic opportunities and improve living standards for Guyanese families while contributing to the country’s long-term development objectives.
Another significant area of discussion involved Guyana’s ambition to become a regional hub for data centres, artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies.
President Ali explored opportunities for United States support in developing the infrastructure, technical expertise and investment partnerships necessary to strengthen Guyana’s position in the growing digital economy.
He noted that investment in artificial intelligence, data centres and related technologies would create new opportunities for Guyanese professionals, entrepreneurs and businesses, while positioning the country as an important participant in the hemisphere’s digital economy.
The discussions reflect the Ali administration’s broader strategy of diversifying Guyana’s economy beyond petroleum production by attracting international investment into agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, housing and emerging technology industries.
President Ali underscored the importance of maintaining a strong economic relationship with the United States, particularly as Guyana continues to pursue major development projects and strengthen its role in regional trade and investment.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to long-term investment, economic diversification and sustainable prosperity for Guyana and the wider region,” President Ali stated.
The engagement with Secretary Lutnick reinforces Guyana’s efforts to deepen its economic partnership with Washington and attract investment capable of supporting sustainable growth, job creation, technological advancement and greater opportunities for the Guyanese people.
