His Excellency Dharamkumar Seeraj, the new High Commissioner of Guyana to India, is the ideal diplomat to engage with the Indian government and business community. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guyana, the relationship between the two countries has grown significantly more substantial. Many Indian business entities are now interested in investing in Guyana, and having the High Commissioner in India will facilitate these investment ventures by Indian conglomerates. India can offer expertise, human resources, investments, and other forms of support that will help Guyana develop rapidly. The cultural connection between India and Guyana is also very close due to the shared heritage of the people of Indian origin in Guyana.

The appointment of Dharamkumar Seeraj as Guyana’s new High Commissioner to India marks a significant milestone in his distinguished career. A prominent leader in Guyana’s agricultural sector, Seeraj has been a Member of Parliament since 2006 and holds several influential positions within the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C). He is a longstanding member of both the Executive and Central Committees of the PPP/C and has served as the President of the Rice Producers Association (RPA) for over a decade.
Recognized as one of the most qualified and experienced agriculture experts within the PPP/C and Parliament, Mr Seeraj’s expertise and leadership have been instrumental in advancing Guyana’s agricultural agenda. His track record includes representing Guyana at the African, Caribbean, and Pacific–European Union (ACP-EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly in 2013, showcasing his commitment to fostering international partnerships.
The decision to appoint Mr Seeraj comes after Guyana formally sought accreditation from the Indian Government in July 2024 to fill the position, which had been vacant for nearly three years. His appointment is expected to deepen the already strong bilateral relations between Guyana and India, particularly in agriculture, a sector of shared strategic importance.
This new role allows Mr Seeraj to leverage his vast experience to enhance trade, technology transfer, and food security cooperation. As High Commissioner, he is poised to play a pivotal role in furthering Guyana’s global engagement and strengthening its partnership with India.
