Guyana is stepping up efforts to strengthen its electricity infrastructure as rising power consumption places greater demands on the national grid.

The Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation and Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) recently met with several major contractors to review progress on ongoing electricity projects and address issues that could affect their completion.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar led the meeting, which included Kesh Nandlall, Team Leader of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Bharat Harjohn. Ryan Ross and Shaun Hamlet, along with other senior officials, also participated in the discussions.

Representatives from InterEnergy, PowerChina, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMC) and Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) provided updates on the projects for which they were responsible.

The discussions covered construction progress, expected completion dates, upcoming stages of the projects, and areas that may require additional attention. Officials also examined implementation challenges and ways to improve coordination among GPL, the Government, and the contractors.

The Government’s engagement with the contractors is part of a broader effort to ensure that major electricity infrastructure projects remain on schedule and are delivered within their agreed timelines.

Expanding capacity to meet growing demand

Guyana’s electricity requirements have risen considerably in recent years, driven by population growth, new housing developments, expanding businesses and increased industrial activity.

Rising demand has placed additional pressure on electricity generation and on the transmission and distribution network. As a result, strengthening the grid has become an important component of the country’s wider infrastructure development programme.

The projects GPL and its partners are currently advancing are intended to increase the system’s capacity while improving the reliability and resilience of electricity delivery.

The upgrades are expected to increase the network’s capacity to meet current demand while preparing for further growth in electricity consumption.

    Coordinating major infrastructure works

With several large-scale projects underway simultaneously, the utility, Government agencies, and contractors are working more closely.

Regular reviews allow officials to identify delays, technical challenges and other issues that could affect delivery schedules. The latest engagement also allowed contractors to outline upcoming milestones and gave GPL a chance to communicate areas requiring greater coordination.

The Government’s approach comes as Guyana continues to expand its electricity generation capacity and invest in the infrastructure needed to transmit power efficiently across the country.

Recent investments include new-generation facilities, renewable-energy projects, transmission upgrades and improvements to the distribution network. GPL has previously indicated that it is investing approximately US$800 million in electricity infrastructure, with major projects expected to improve reliability as they come online.

    Reliability remains a key priority.

Strengthening the grid is particularly important as GPL manages record levels of electricity demand.

Recent increases in consumption have exposed capacity constraints across parts of the existing network, making investment in transmission lines, substations and distribution equipment increasingly necessary.

Officials have also noted that not every power interruption is caused by inadequate generation. Some outages are necessary to facilitate maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, while others result from accidental damage to utility infrastructure caused by construction equipment and vehicles.

The current programme therefore combines additional generation with improvements to the infrastructure that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.

As the projects progress, the Ministry and GPL are expected to maintain engagement with the contractors to monitor implementation and resolve issues that could threaten delivery schedules.

The latest review reflects the Government’s broader effort to modernise Guyana’s electricity system and build a network that can support the country’s rapidly expanding economy and future energy needs.
