Guyana and Zambia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, with a renewed focus on media collaboration and economic partnerships. Building on diplomatic ties dating back to 1971, both countries are now seeking to translate longstanding goodwill into more concrete, forward-looking initiatives.
This renewed engagement took shape on the sidelines of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day Conference, in Lusaka, Zambia, where Guyana’s Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy, held a courtesy meeting with Zambia’s Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa. The discussions highlighted a shared interest in strengthening cooperation across key sectors, particularly in media development and knowledge exchange.
Both ministers emphasised the value of cross-border learning and agreed on the need to foster closer collaboration between their respective media industries. They also explored avenues for future engagement to support innovation, capacity building, and the responsible dissemination of information in an evolving global media landscape.
Minister McCoy also played a prominent role at the conference, delivering remarks at the closing ceremony. The event, held in Lusaka and hosted in collaboration with UNESCO, brought together a diverse group of media professionals, innovators, regulators, and policymakers from around the world. It provided a platform for dialogue on press freedom, media responsibility, and the role of journalism in promoting democratic values and sustainable development.
The strengthened partnership between Guyana and Zambia signals mutual recognition of the importance of media as both a development tool and a pillar of democratic governance, while also opening doors to broader economic cooperation in the years ahead.
