Minister Indar, who holds the position of Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, lauded China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for its transformative impact on participating countries. He made these remarks during his address at the High-Level Forum on Connectivity as part of the Third Belt and Road Forum for Infrastructure Cooperation taking place in Beijing, China.
During his speech, Minister Indar emphasized that promoting connectivity among BRI partner nations extends beyond constructing physical infrastructure like roads and bridges. It encompasses the construction of bridges that foster mutual understanding, cooperation, and shared prosperity.
In front of a global audience, including ministers responsible for public works, infrastructure, aviation, logistics, and transportation, Minister Indar highlighted the extensive advantages of the BRI, including stimulating economic activity, reducing transportation costs, alleviating poverty, and promoting cultural exchange. He also stressed the importance of pursuing the initiative sustainably, considering environmental impacts, social consequences, and debt sustainability to ensure that connectivity benefits do not harm the planet.
In discussions with the press on the sidelines of the event, Minister Indar underscored the growing significance of the BRI for Guyana, given the expansion of the country’s infrastructure portfolio following the commencement of oil and gas production. This initiative provides crucial access to technology and financing.
The opening session and various event breakout sessions featured addresses by the Presidents of China, Russia, Argentina, and the Prime Minister of Egypt, among others. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear presentations from the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
