France began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style with a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal, powered by a sensational performance from captain Kylian Mbappé. The win not only earned Les Bleus three crucial points but also marked a historic night for their superstar forward, who became France’s all-time leading international goal scorer.

The match, played before a packed crowd in the United States, started with both teams displaying attacking intent. Senegal refused to be intimidated by the former world champions and created several promising opportunities during an entertaining first half. The African side’s pace and physicality troubled the French defense, and for long periods the contest remained evenly balanced.

Despite France’s possession advantage, Senegal looked dangerous on the counterattack and came close to opening the scoring before halftime. However, France emerged from the break with renewed energy and significantly improved attacking movement. The introduction of greater creativity in midfield allowed the French forwards to find more space in dangerous areas.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the second half when Mbappé showcased the qualities that have made him one of the world’s most feared attackers. Timing his run perfectly, he finished calmly to give France the lead and settle any nerves within the French camp. The goal changed the momentum of the match, forcing Senegal to push forward in search of an equalizer.

France soon doubled their advantage through a beautifully executed team move, with the attack highlighting the technical quality and depth of Didier Deschamps’ squad. Senegal continued to fight and managed to pull a goal back, raising hopes of a late comeback. Yet those hopes were crushed when Mbappé produced a moment of brilliance deep into stoppage time, striking from long range to seal the victory and complete his memorable brace.

The second goal was particularly significant. It took Mbappé past the previous French scoring record held by Olivier Giroud, making the 27-year-old the highest goal scorer in the history of the French national team. The achievement further strengthened his legacy as one of the greatest players France has ever produced.

For France, the victory represents an ideal start to a tournament in which they are widely regarded as one of the favorites. The team’s combination of experience, pace, creativity, and attacking firepower makes them a formidable contender for the trophy. Mbappé’s form will be especially encouraging for French supporters, who hope he can lead the nation to another World Cup triumph.

Senegal, meanwhile, can take positives despite the defeat. Their performance demonstrated resilience, tactical discipline, and the ability to compete with one of football’s elite nations. If they maintain the same intensity in their remaining group matches, they remain strong contenders to advance to the knockout stages.

As the tournament gathers momentum, France have sent a clear message to their rivals. With Kylian Mbappé breaking records and delivering match-winning performances, Les Bleus appear ready for another serious challenge for football’s biggest prize. The road to World Cup glory is long, but France have taken their first step in emphatic fashion.
