Dr Komal Samaroo, Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), has officially launched a major new phase in Guyana’s agricultural development with the arrival of the first shipment of high-yielding dairy cattle for its US$30 million Moblissa dairy project.
A total of 89 pregnant heifers arrived in Guyana from the United States aboard a specialised Amerijet charter flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) early on Friday morning. The shipment marks the first major operational step in DDL’s plan to reduce Guyana’s heavy dependence on imported dairy products and to build a modern local dairy industry.
The cattle were transported from the airport to the Moblissa facility under strict biosecurity measures along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. The operation was a carefully coordinated logistics exercise lasting approximately three hours, with police escorts and specially prepared transport systems ensuring the animals arrived safely at their new home.
The Moblissa dairy project is being developed by Demerara Dairy Inc. (DDI), a subsidiary of DDL. The initiative is expected to become Guyana’s first large-scale modern dairy farm and is regarded as a transformative investment for the country’s agricultural sector.
According to officials, the imported cattle are high-yielding dairy breeds selected to improve Guyana’s milk production capacity. The animals are already pregnant, enabling the farm to accelerate milk production and rapidly expand herd numbers over the coming months.
Investment forms part of a wider national push to strengthen food security, reduce import costs, and promote long-term agricultural sustainability. Guyana currently imports a significant share of its dairy products, including milk and cheese, and the Moblissa project aims to substantially reduce that dependence.
The dairy farm is also expected to create employment opportunities, support local agricultural suppliers, and encourage technological advancement within the livestock industry. Modern farming systems, specialised veterinary care, and advanced dairy management practices are expected to be integrated into the operation.
DDL described the project as a key milestone in Guyana’s agricultural transformation and a strategic investment in the country’s future food production capacity. The company believes the initiative will help position Guyana as a stronger regional dairy producer and support national economic growth.
The arrival of the cattle marks only the beginning of the broader development plan for the Moblissa facility, with further expansion, infrastructure development, and additional livestock imports expected in the future.
