Georgetown, Guyana — Residents of the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme in Region Four are welcoming a major road expansion project expected to improve access to their homes, reduce travel difficulties and strengthen connections to key highways across Guyana.
The project involves the construction of approximately 1,800 metres of reinforced concrete roadways linking the housing scheme directly to the Aubrey Barker Four-Lane Highway. According to the Ministry of Housing, the works are now 75 per cent complete.
Minister of Housing Collin Croal recently visited the community to inspect progress, following commitments made during a residents’ engagement in July.
The new access routes are intended to provide residents with more convenient alternatives to the existing entrance through Red Road in ‘E’ Field, Sophia.
New Roads to Improve Access Across Greater Georgetown
The road expansion is expected to make daily travel easier for residents, including families who have recently moved into the development and homeowners still constructing their houses.
The connection to the Aubrey Barker Highway will provide access to other major road networks, including the Ogle-Eccles Highway, Mandela-to-Eccles Highway and Heroes Highway.
These connections are expected to improve journeys to central Georgetown, the East Coast and East Bank Demerara, as well as Region Three through the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
Minister Croal said the project responds directly to concerns raised by residents during his earlier visit.
He indicated that the eastern access road would be available to all types of vehicles within a week, while the western section was expected to be completed within two weeks of his inspection.
Residents Welcome Improved Road Connectivity
First-time homeowner Chandra Singh welcomed the project, describing it as an important improvement for people establishing their lives in the growing housing community.
She said the new road would make access considerably easier and expressed appreciation for the infrastructure being developed alongside new homes.
Another resident, Tara Balram, also welcomed the improved route, noting that it would make travelling to her workplace more convenient.
Their responses highlight the importance of road infrastructure in helping new housing communities become better connected to workplaces, services and other parts of the country.
More Than 450 Homes Completed in Northern Section
The northern section of the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme includes more than 450 completed turnkey homes, comprising two-bedroom and three-bedroom flat and elevated houses.
The area also has internal concrete roads, a police outpost and public open spaces intended to support residents as the community expands.
In the southern section, where house lots have been allocated, development is continuing. Initial infrastructure, including electrical networks and pipelines, has already been installed as homeowners begin constructing their properties.
Government Continues Infrastructure Development
Minister Croal reaffirmed the Ministry of Housing’s commitment to expanding infrastructure in line with the community’s growing population.
The road project forms part of wider efforts to ensure that new housing developments are supported by reliable transportation links and essential community facilities.
As more families settle in Cummings Lodge, further improvements are expected to address the infrastructure needs of the expanding residential area.
The project is intended to make daily commuting more convenient while supporting the continued development of Cummings Lodge as a growing residential community in Region Four.
