GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The new West Demerara Hospital is expected to open in late 2027, bringing advanced diagnostic equipment and specialised medical services closer to residents of Region Three and surrounding communities.
Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony provided the update following a visit to the construction site, where he reported that work on the modern healthcare facility is progressing steadily. The hospital is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery and reduce the need for patients to travel to Georgetown for specialised investigations and treatment.
Advanced Medical Technology and Specialist Services
The new facility will be equipped with modern diagnostic technology, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, alongside cardiac catheterisation capabilities.
These services will enable doctors to investigate complex medical conditions more efficiently and support timely treatment for patients requiring specialised care.
Cardiac catheterisation facilities are particularly important for diagnosing and treating certain heart conditions, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region to access these services.
The expanded diagnostic capacity is expected to strengthen the hospital’s role in delivering comprehensive healthcare to a growing population.
Improving Healthcare Access in Region Three
The development forms part of wider efforts to modernise Guyana’s healthcare infrastructure and expand access to quality medical services across the country.
Region Three has experienced population and economic growth, increasing demand for healthcare facilities capable of providing a broader range of services.
Once operational, the new hospital is expected to ease pressure on existing public health facilities while providing patients with more convenient access to specialist consultations, diagnostic investigations and treatment.
The project also aims to create an improved working environment for healthcare professionals, supporting more efficient service delivery and patient care.
Part of Guyana’s Wider Healthcare Expansion
The West Demerara Hospital is among the major healthcare infrastructure projects being pursued as part of the government’s broader programme to strengthen the national health system.
Investment in new hospitals, upgraded medical facilities and modern equipment is intended to improve healthcare access, enhance diagnostic capabilities and expand specialised treatment options.
The new facility will complement existing regional healthcare services and help bring advanced medical care closer to communities that have traditionally depended on Georgetown for certain procedures.
Reopening Target Set for Late 2027
Construction remains ongoing, with late 2027 identified as the anticipated opening period.
When completed, the hospital is expected to represent a significant addition to Region Three’s healthcare network, offering modern facilities and specialised services designed to meet the needs of residents.
The project is intended to support Guyana’s wider objective of building a more accessible and modern healthcare system while improving the availability of quality medical care throughout the country.
