President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the Amir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, held high-level discussions on Tuesday as Guyana continued efforts to strengthen its growing relationship with Qatar.
The talks took place at the Amiri Diwan in Doha during President Ali’s three-day State Visit and centred on expanding bilateral relations, increasing investment opportunities and identifying new areas of cooperation that could deliver long-term benefits for both countries.
The meeting represents another step in Guyana’s efforts to broaden its international economic partnerships as the country continues to attract investment and position itself as an emerging destination for business and development.
During the opening of the official talks, the Qatari Amir welcomed President Ali and members of the Guyanese delegation. He expressed the hope that the visit would help open additional avenues for cooperation and further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
President Ali, in turn, expressed Guyana’s appreciation for Qatar’s hospitality and reaffirmed Georgetown’s interest in taking bilateral relations to a higher level.
“Guyana is keen to strengthen cooperation relations and advance them toward further development and growth,” the President said.
Investment featured prominently in the discussions, with the two sides examining opportunities to expand economic cooperation and encourage greater engagement between Guyanese and Qatari interests.
The leaders also reviewed the broader state of relations between Guyana and Qatar and considered areas where cooperation could be expanded. Their discussions reflected Guyana’s increasing focus on attracting international investment and building strategic partnerships as its economy undergoes rapid transformation.
In addition to bilateral matters, President Ali and the Amir exchanged views on a number of regional and international developments of mutual interest. The discussions provided an opportunity for both leaders to share perspectives on current global issues and matters affecting their respective regions.
The official talks were followed by a separate bilateral meeting between President Ali and Sheikh Tamim, allowing the two leaders to continue their discussions and exchange views on important developments on the international and regional stage.
President Ali had earlier arrived at the Amiri Diwan, where he received a formal welcome from the Qatari leadership. The visit included an official reception ceremony marking the importance attached to the Guyanese President’s presence in Doha.

The Guyanese delegation accompanying the President included Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd, Guyana’s Ambassador to Qatar Safraaz Ahmad Shadood, Director of Presidential Affairs at the Office of the President Marcia Mezan Sharma, George Andrew Hallaq and other senior officials.
Representing Qatar at the discussions were Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi and Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, along with other senior government officials.
Following the formal engagements, Sheikh Tamim hosted a luncheon in honour of President Ali and the Guyanese delegation, providing a further opportunity for engagement between officials from the two countries.
President Ali’s visit to Qatar began on Sunday with his arrival in Doha and forms part of Guyana’s broader diplomatic and economic outreach. The State Visit is aimed at strengthening ties with Qatar while creating opportunities for increased investment, trade and cooperation.
The engagement comes at a significant period for Guyana, which is seeking to leverage its rapid economic growth to establish stronger partnerships with countries and investors around the world. Qatar, with its substantial investment capacity and experience across energy, infrastructure, finance and other sectors, represents an important potential partner as Guyana continues its development agenda.
The discussions in Doha therefore signal a shared interest in moving Guyana-Qatar relations beyond diplomatic engagement and towards deeper economic and investment cooperation, with both sides looking to identify opportunities that can contribute to sustained growth and mutual prosperity.
