Guyana’s tourism sector is on track for another record year, with visitor numbers continuing to rise and the country now expected to surpass the 500,000-arrival mark by the end of 2026.
Figures released by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce show that 48,582 visitors entered Guyana in August, an increase of 5.6 per cent on the same month last year.
The latest monthly performance adds to a strong year-to-date showing. Between January and August, Guyana recorded 11 per cent more arrivals than in the same period in 2025, highlighting sustained expansion in the country’s tourism industry.
Leisure continues to dominate the travel market, accounting for 62 per cent of total arrivals. Business travellers accounted for 14 per cent, while the remaining 24 per cent travelled for other purposes.
The United States remains Guyana’s leading international visitor market, accounting for 39 per cent of arrivals. Caribbean destinations followed closely, contributing 33 per cent. Latin America accounted for nine per cent, while Canada and Europe represented seven per cent and five per cent, respectively. Visitors from other markets made up the remaining six per cent.
Officials credited several factors for the continued growth, including major sporting and cultural events taking place across the country.
The Global Super League cricket tournament, which ran into the beginning of August, brought international players, supporters and other visitors to Guyana. Its success has also helped to strengthen the country’s profile as an emerging destination for sports tourism.
The August holiday period provided another boost, as members of the Guyanese diaspora returned home in significant numbers. The increase underscores the importance of family, heritage and cultural connections in driving travel to the country.
Together, these developments are contributing to a broader tourism image for Guyana, with the destination increasingly positioned around its cultural heritage, sporting events and strong community ties.
Momentum is expected to continue through the final months of the year, with several high-profile events still on the calendar. These include the State of the Tourism Industry Conference, along with events associated with Diwali, Tourism Awareness Month and the Christmas period.
The anticipated State Visit by Their Majesties, The King and Queen, is also expected to generate additional international interest in Guyana and further promote the country’s tourism offerings.
With visitor numbers already showing double-digit growth for much of 2026, Guyana is heading into the final quarter with strong momentum and a realistic prospect of surpassing the half-million visitor threshold for the year.
