A Government Service Centre established in Port Mourant has completed over 50,000 transactions since opening in June, saving Berbice residents an estimated $250 million in transportation costs that would otherwise have been spent travelling to Georgetown.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali made the revelation on Saturday while consulting with residents on the ambitious Model Village Initiative at the Rose Hall Primary School.
He told residents that the centre has cut out trips that often required more than one visit to the capital to resolve.
“If you take a minimum of five thousand dollars per day only in transportation to go to do those transactions in Georgetown, you are talking about over 250 million dollars that you have saved in transportation costs alone,” he explained.
The head of state said the centre is an example of how development is reaching communities in tangible, everyday ways.
He added the initiative forms part of a broader model of development aimed at creating economic opportunity and improving quality of life across the region.
