With Azruddin Mohamed facing imminent extradition proceedings in the United States and Aubrey Norton having suffered a major political setback in Linden, opposition parties appear increasingly uncertain about how to reconnect with voters. In contrast, Dr Jagdeo continues to present himself as a leader committed to delivering on commitments made to Guyanese. His visit brought together government officials, technical teams and professionals, who listened to residents, addressed concerns and outlined ongoing and future projects.
The strong appreciation shown by residents reflected their recognition of the work underway. For many supporters, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo remains a trusted and experienced leader—regarded as a safe pair of hands, with words backed by action and results.
Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed confidence in the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) as it looks ahead to the 2031 General and Regional Elections, noting that the party’s continued engagement with communities and its focus on improving people’s lives have placed it on a strong footing.
Dr Jagdeo made the remarks after an extensive public engagement at Watooka Guest House in Linden, where he met residents and listened to concerns ranging from housing and healthcare to infrastructure and other community needs.
According to the Vice-President, one of the PPP/C’s key strengths has been its willingness to remain accessible to ordinary citizens. He said the President, ministers, and other senior government officials have consistently maintained direct contact with communities, rather than distancing themselves from the public.
Dr Jagdeo argued that this approach distinguishes the PPP/C from its political opponents, claiming that some opposition leaders became increasingly disconnected from citizens after holding office.
The Vice-President also urged citizens to look beyond political speculation and focus on the government’s programme in the coming years. He stressed that the administration still has substantial time to implement its development agenda and address issues affecting communities across Guyana.
“We have nearly five years ahead of us to continue solving people’s problems,” Dr Jagdeo said, maintaining that the PPP/C remains on solid ground as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
He also suggested that developments over the next several years could significantly reshape the political landscape, predicting that Guyanese could experience unexpected changes by 2030.
The Linden outreach demonstrated the government’s approach to bringing decision-makers and technical officials directly into communities. Residents were able to raise their concerns with government representatives, while officials provided information, immediate assistance where possible, and updates on planned investments.
Healthcare, housing and infrastructure were among the key areas discussed during the engagement, reflecting the government’s stated intention to continue directing resources towards improving living conditions and expanding public services.
The programme continued despite a confrontation outside the venue, where members of the Opposition crossed the barricades and staged protests during the public engagement.
Dr Jagdeo dismissed the disruption as an attempt to divert attention from the exercise’s purpose, arguing that it did not prevent residents from meeting government officials to discuss issues affecting their communities.
The Vice-President maintained that the PPP/C’s priority remains its development programme and its relationship with the people, rather than political distractions. He said the party intends to use the coming years to continue delivering on its commitments and to strengthen its position ahead of the 2031 elections.
