Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) is set to be among the first regions to clear its housing backlog, with government projections indicating the issue will be addressed by the end of 2026.
This will be achieved by developing 351 house lots, which is three times what is needed to address the current backlog.
Potaro-Siparuni had a backlog of 103 housing applications at the end of 2025.
“At the current pace of infrastructure development, Region Eight backlog will be completely cleared by the end of 2026,” President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali stated during a recent live broadcast.
Recent government investments have significantly expanded access to potable water across the region, complementing ongoing efforts to improve housing and essential infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) is expected to meet the demands of its current housing backlog in 2027 because of ongoing infrastructure development.
It will continue to lay the groundwork for allocating more house lots.
The region has a housing backlog of 475 applications. Some 319 house lots are currently in the process of being allocated to contribute to the region’s housing programme.
Earlier this year, Minister of Housing Collin Croal announced plans for another housing development in Bartica as demand for house lots continues to grow.
The ministry is working with the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission to secure additional lands, complementing more than 500 house lot allocations already made across four major housing areas in the town.
