The government is preparing to purchase more land in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) as it steps up efforts to address the rising demand for housing and cut down the backlog of houses in the region.

Addressing the nation on the state of the country’s housing project during a recent broadcast, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said Region Two has had a backlog of 2,523 housing applications as of December 2025.

Since the beginning of 2026, 192 lots have already been distributed, bringing the backlog down to 2,331. In addition, 314 lots are ready for distribution, and another 2,625 lots will be developed.

The Guyanese leader disclosed that additional private lands will also be acquired to meet both existing and future housing needs.

“We have to buy private lands, and I want people to understand this. In Region Two, the government will now have to acquire private lands to clear the backlog and also to cater for future demand. That is where we are in Region Two.”

The latest plans build on ongoing housing expansion across the Essequibo Coast. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Housing announced plans to construct both moderate- and low-income homes in Region Two, including at Onderneeming Phase Four and the new Hoff Van Aurich Housing Scheme.

The ministry also committed to completing infrastructure works to allow allottees access to their lands while advancing measures to address longstanding drainage challenges in several areas.

Housing development has accelerated in recent years through the expansion of new housing schemes at Charity, Lima Sands, Onderneeming and Hoff Van Aurich.
