Senior Cabinet Ministers, led by Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, attended the 2026 National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference, joining Indigenous leaders from across Guyana for one of the country’s most significant annual gatherings focused on the development and empowerment of Amerindian communities.

The conference brought together Toshaos (village leaders), government ministers, regional officials, and stakeholders to discuss critical issues affecting Indigenous villages, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, environmental conservation, and sustainable economic development.

Among the senior government officials present were Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat, and Hon. Kwame McCoy, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, all of whom participated in the discussions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with Indigenous communities.

The photographs from the conference captured Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo addressing delegates during one of the sessions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the government and Indigenous leaders in advancing Guyana’s development agenda. Another image shows Toshaos from across the country attentively listening to the proceedings, proudly representing their communities in traditional Indigenous attire. A separate photograph features Vickram Bharrat and Hon. Kwame McCoy seated alongside fellow Cabinet ministers and government officials as they participated in the conference discussions.

Throughout the event, Cabinet ministers highlighted ongoing investments in Amerindian villages, including improvements in road connectivity, education, healthcare services, housing, renewable energy, digital connectivity, and community development initiatives. They stressed that Indigenous communities remain key partners in Guyana’s national development and that their voices are essential in shaping government policies.

The National Toshaos Council Conference serves as a vital platform for direct engagement between the government and Indigenous leaders, allowing village representatives to raise concerns, propose solutions, and discuss priorities for their communities. Delegates also exchanged ideas on strengthening local governance, preserving Indigenous culture, promoting youth empowerment, and ensuring sustainable management of natural resources.

The atmosphere throughout the conference reflected a spirit of cooperation, with ministers and Toshaos engaging in meaningful dialogue and applauding initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in Guyana’s hinterland regions.

As the 2026 National Toshaos Council Conference continues, discussions are expected to focus on expanding opportunities for Indigenous communities while ensuring that development remains inclusive, sustainable, and respectful of Guyana’s rich cultural heritage.
