The decision by President Dr Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo to convene Cabinet ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Regional Executive Officers and other senior officials to reinforce accountability and transparency is an important and timely step. It sends a strong message to the public that the Government takes procurement rules, public spending and ethical conduct seriously.

The warning against individuals using multiple companies or attempting to manipulate the system for contracts demonstrates that the administration intends to maintain strict oversight and ensure fairness in awarding public projects.

It is important for citizens to feel reassured that the President and Vice President remain fully in control of the situation and are committed to safeguarding the integrity of government systems.

At a time when rumours, criticism, fake news and misinformation continue to circulate across social media platforms, newspapers and public discussions, stronger communication between the Government and the people has become increasingly necessary. Individuals are using many online platforms to spread speculation and confusion, which can create unnecessary distrust among citizens. This is why regular public engagement and weekly press conferences are important for keeping Guyanese informed about the Government’s work and national development plans.

The leadership shown by the President and Vice President at the start of the new five-year term is a positive sign for the country, as it reinforces discipline, accountability and transparency across all levels of government, including ministers, Permanent Secretaries and other public officials. Unfortunately, a few fraudsters are eager to exploit the system.

On Wednesday, President Dr Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo delivered a strong message on accountability, transparency and responsible governance during a high-level meeting with senior public officials and regional administrators.

The engagement brought together Cabinet ministers, incoming Regional Executive Officers (REOs), Permanent Secretaries, accounting officers from all administrative regions, and representatives of the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board as the Government intensifies efforts to strengthen oversight of public spending and procurement systems.

During the meeting, President Dr Ali reminded officials that holding public office entails significant responsibility to citizens and warned that all decisions involving state resources must be guided by integrity, legality, and national development priorities.

According to information released by the Office of the President, the administration remains firmly committed to ensuring that procurement processes at both the national and regional levels are conducted transparently and in full compliance with the law.

The President stressed that government spending must directly benefit citizens and support Guyana’s ongoing development agenda, adding that public resources cannot be mismanaged or misused.

As part of the Government’s modernisation drive, President Dr Ali also highlighted plans to integrate advanced technology and artificial intelligence into procurement-monitoring systems to improve efficiency, strengthen oversight and help identify irregularities in the awarding and management of contracts.

He cautioned officials that any breaches of procurement or financial regulations would be taken seriously, including cases involving individuals connected to multiple companies that violate existing rules.

President Dr Ali made it clear that misconduct or abuse of office could result in severe disciplinary action, including dismissal where necessary.

Vice President Dr Jagdeo also addressed the gathering, emphasising that every dollar the State spends must be measured against its value to the people and its contribution to national progress.

He said the Government is continuing to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms to reduce waste, enhance transparency, and ensure greater accountability across the public sector.

Dr Jagdeo noted that as Guyana continues to expand its economy and undertake major development projects, robust governance systems are essential to maintaining public confidence and ensuring effective resource management.

The meeting forms part of the administration’s broader push to reinforce fiscal discipline, improve institutional efficiency, and ensure that all public officials operate to the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.
