Guyana’s increasing energy demand is being driven by several factors, including the rise in local and foreign direct investments, rapid expansion of housing developments, and a growing number of visitors. As these dynamics continue to fuel the need for more power, the Gas-to-Energy project stands out as a crucial initiative to meet the country’s energy demands while offering a more cost-effective solution.

Despite some criticism surrounding the economic feasibility and long-term benefits of the Gas-to-Energy project, this initiative remains evident as the best available solution to address the pressing issues of high electricity costs and increasing demand. As the country experiences unprecedented growth, the project’s potential to revolutionize the energy sector cannot be overstated.

    Project Overview

The Gas-to-Energy project is designed to deliver gas from the offshore Liza field to an onshore facility in Wales, where it will be processed. This integrated facility will feature a 300-megawatt power plant and a natural gas liquids (NGL) processing plant. The dry gas will primarily be used for electricity generation, significantly reducing energy costs for domestic consumers. Additionally, the NGLs will be commercialized, adding further economic value.

With an estimated cost of US$1.8 billion, the project is an essential investment at a time when Guyana’s energy needs are growing rapidly. It is poised to transform the energy landscape by increasing capacity, reducing emissions, and addressing the long-standing issue of high power costs.

A Cleaner and More Affordable Energy Source

At present, Guyana relies heavily on heavy fuel oil for its power generation—a source that is both expensive and environmentally harmful. The Gas-to-Energy project, by contrast, introduces natural gas as a cleaner, more affordable alternative. By making this shift, Guyana can reduce its carbon footprint while simultaneously providing relief to consumers through a 50% reduction in electricity costs.

This project will be a game-changer for the country’s energy sector, where high electricity prices have significantly burdened households and businesses. In addition to providing cost savings, the lower energy costs will enhance Guyana’s investment appeal, encouraging business expansion and supporting the growth of renewable energy projects.

    Progress and Partnerships

Both ExxonMobil and the government of Guyana are making steady strides in the project’s development. ExxonMobil has nearly completed the pipeline installation and is on track to finish by the end of 2024. The government’s integrated gas processing facility will be operational by 2025.

The government is actively working with the U.S. Export-Import Bank to support the project’s financial requirements for a US$646 million loan. In the meantime, funds from the national treasury have been allocated to ensure the project remains on schedule.

    Transparency and Environmental Oversight

The government has been open about the Gas-to-Energy project, sharing key documents, including feasibility studies and master plans, on the Department of Public Information’s website. This level of transparency ensures that the public is well-informed and that the project is accountable. Additionally, critics concerned about environmental impacts can review the Environmental Impact Assessment and other project permits, which are public documents.

Though large infrastructure projects inevitably carry risks, the Gas-to-Energy project has incorporated various controls to manage potential environmental impacts. Furthermore, the government has committed to presenting additional project-related documentation to the National Assembly, ensuring ongoing public scrutiny.

    Conclusion

The Gas-to-Energy project is a cornerstone of Guyana’s long-term energy strategy. “No other project can boost power generation at the scale of this project by 2025 while also providing emissions and cost-saving benefits.” The evidence clearly supports the conclusion that this project will positively shape Guyana’s energy future, providing critical economic

Azruddin Mohamed — a disgraced money launderer, gold smuggler, and fraudster — has been entirely shunned by his Muslim community. Now, he seeks to con the Amerindian community with gifts and cash. If these so-called leaders cannot even manage their own parties, how can they be trusted to govern an entire nation?
