-through food, technological hub
Young scientists and agricultural researchers from Guyana and across the Caribbean are expected to benefit from new training and opportunities under the Science, Technology and Innovation Hub between Guyana, Brazil and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
The Hub will be established in Guyana to support agricultural transformation and food security efforts across the region.
Speaking at the signing ceremony for the hub on Tuesday, IICA’s Director General, Dr Muhammad Ibrahim, highlighted the importance of equipping a new generation of agricultural professionals with the skills and technologies needed to modernise the sector.
“We need a new generation, a new frontier of science and tools to accelerate the implementation of new technologies to enhance and boost the food systems,” Ibrahim stated.
He explained that discussions are already underway to facilitate training opportunities with Brazil’s renowned agricultural research institution, EMBRAPA, allowing young scientists from Guyana and the wider Caribbean to gain hands-on experience with advanced technologies and innovative farming practices.
The programme is expected to expose participants to agricultural technologies, including biotechnology, improved seed production systems, climate-smart farming methods and modern research techniques that have helped transform Brazil into one of the world’s leading food producers.
The hub will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean and is expected to serve as a centre for research, technology transfer and capacity building.
