Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday convened a high-level meeting with Government Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Regional Executive Officers, accounting officers from key semi-autonomous agencies and other senior officials at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

The meeting centred on measures to strengthen management and improve the delivery of government programmes across ministries, regions and public sector agencies, with particular emphasis on accountability, transparency and compliance.

Among the key areas discussed were procurement processes, government payment systems and the timely dissemination of information to the public. The measures are intended to improve oversight, reduce inefficiencies and ensure that public resources are managed responsibly.

Vice President Jagdeo underscored the critical responsibility of Permanent Secretaries and Regional Executive Officers in ensuring that their respective ministries, regions and agencies comply with all applicable laws, regulations and established procedures.

He also stressed the need for sound and efficient management of the public resources entrusted to government institutions, noting that effective oversight is essential to ensuring that government programmes achieve their intended results.

The meeting further examined initiatives to strengthen the monitoring and tracking of compliance, particularly in relation to procurement and government payment systems. Senior accounting officials were cautioned that breaches of established laws, regulations and procedures would carry consequences for those found responsible.

Jagdeo also reaffirmed the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government’s commitment to improving the delivery of public services and strengthening the way citizens interact with state institutions.

He highlighted the growing role of modern technology in government operations, particularly in improving efficiency, accessibility and the overall quality of public services.

The Vice President said the Government remains focused on ensuring that citizens have a better experience when accessing state services, receive improved services and ultimately benefit from measures aimed at enhancing their quality of life.

The meeting forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public sector management, accountability and efficiency while ensuring that government resources are used transparently and in the best interest of citizens.
