Stronger hotel-farmer linkages to create new market opportunities for local producers

Local farmers could gain a more reliable and predictable market for their produce as the government moves to strengthen direct linkages between agricultural producers and Guyana’s growing hospitality sector.

Speaking at an engagement with farmers at the Liliendall Community Centre on Wednesday, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said the initiative aims to ensure the expansion of the hotel industry translates into more opportunities for Guyanese farmers, while allowing hotels to access a more consistent supply of locally produced food.

This will ultimately give farmers greater confidence to increase production and invest in areas such as irrigation, improved planting material, greenhouse technology, and farm machinery, knowing in advance the types and quantities of commodities hotels require.

For hotels, stronger local sourcing could improve access to fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other agricultural products while reducing some of the challenges associated with sourcing food from outside the country.

Minister Mustapha said the approach will also encourage farmers to produce to the standards and specifications required by the hospitality industry, including quality, food safety, packaging and reliable delivery.

“The issue is not simply whether farmers can produce. The issue is whether we can organize production around the requirements of the market,” he said.

He also stated that greater coordination between the two sectors could help reduce gaps between what farmers produce and what hotels need, creating a more efficient agricultural supply chain.

Through the initiative, the Guyana Marketing Corporation is expected to facilitate connections between farmers and hospitality establishments.

The National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute will work with the Guyana Chamber of Commerce and Industry to identify farmers capable of supplying the sector.

The impact could extend beyond individual farms, with increased local purchasing creating additional economic activity for communities involved in transportation, packaging, storage, processing and other services supporting agricultural production.

In parallel, for the hospitality sector, the initiative offers an opportunity to strengthen the local content of the visitor experience, while keeping a greater share of tourism spending within Guyana.

Minister Mustapha stressed that the relationship must ultimately work for both sides, with farmers receiving prices that make production sustainable and hotels gaining access to competitively priced, quality local products.

The government’s approach is to create a stronger connection between two expanding sectors of the economy, ensuring that as Guyana’s tourism industry grows, local farmers are positioned to grow alongside it.
