Despite Guyana recording its strongest-ever National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) performance, Minister of Education Sonia Parag is urging schools, teachers, and education officials to remain focused on improving learning outcomes. She then warned against complacency.

Speaking at the announcement of the 2026 NGSA results last Friday, the minister hailed this year’s performance as the best in the country’s history but emphasised that it should serve as motivation to push for even greater progress in literacy, numeracy and teaching quality.
While celebrating the achievement of the 15,706 pupils who wrote this year’s examinations, the minister said the historic results were the product of deliberate planning, sustained investment and the collective efforts of students, teachers, parents and education officials.
She explained that the government’s education agenda remains focused on strengthening the foundational skills that are essential for lifelong learning.
Since assuming office, she noted that one of the ministry’s earliest priorities has been intensifying its focus on literacy and numeracy, describing them as the building blocks upon which all learning depends.
The ministry expanded literacy and numeracy camps across the country, providing additional support to both students and parents.
It also strengthened teacher training, enhanced the use of mock examinations to identify learning gaps before the NGSA, increased access to textbooks, and continued upgrading schools.
Minister Parag stressed that improving teacher quality remains central to the government’s education transformation agenda and reminded education stakeholders that the work is far from complete.
