Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat has declared Region Three the fastest-growing administrative region in Guyana. Speaking at the launch of Phase 1 of the Port of Vreed-en-Hoop last Saturday, he credited the region’s rapid development to transformative infrastructure projects and strategic government initiatives.

“This project could have been easily sited on the other side of the river in Region 4, but through the President’s vision and leadership and guidance, today we are on the other side of the river, in the region that is considered to be the fastest growing region in Guyana, both in population and economic development,” Minister Bharrat stated.

He emphasized that under President Irfaan Ali’s leadership, the government ensures development reaches every region so all Guyanese benefit. Several significant projects are fueling the economic expansion of Region Three, including:

    Port of Vreed-en-Hoop

The first phase of the Port of Vreed-en-Hoop, launched last Saturday, includes an offshore support base and an industrial fabrication facility. The project is designed to support ExxonMobil’s offshore operations and reduce shipping costs. It represents one of the most significant local content investments since oil was discovered and has created employment opportunities for the region’s residents.

    New Parika Stelling

Parika will soon benefit from a modernized stelling, featuring direct export capabilities for agricultural produce to the Caribbean, cold storage facilities, yacht docking, improved commercial and leisure travel services, and enhanced immigration processing. Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill highlighted that the project will generate jobs and stimulate the local economy.

    Schoonord to Crane Highway

A $15.1 billion investment has brought a 4.1-kilometer dual-carriageway highway from Schoonord to Crane. The highway, featuring medians and two roundabouts, enhances regional connectivity and significantly reduces travel time for commuters who previously had to pass through Vreed-en-Hoop.

    New De Kinderen Regional Hospital

President Irfaan Ali announced the construction of a new hospital in De Kinderen, which will further improve healthcare services in Region Three. The $6.6 billion facility, executed by China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation, will include:

    • 75 in-patient beds
    • Two advanced operating theatres and a minor theatre
    • A fully equipped imaging suite with digital X-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans
    • Modern accident and emergency, as well as outpatient departments

15,000 House Lots for Region Three

The government has committed to allocating 15,000 house lots in Region Three, part of an accelerated housing program supported by Guyana’s oil revenues. This initiative aims to lower the cost of living by providing affordable land to citizens, easing the burden of high property prices.

    Gas-to-Energy Project

Starting this year, the Gas-to-Energy project will cut electricity costs by 50% by utilizing Guyana’s natural gas as a power source. The project will also produce low-cost natural gas liquids (NGL), further strengthening the region’s economic potential. Currently under construction, the project has already generated employment for residents.

Minister Bharrat emphasized that Region Three’s unprecedented growth is backed by tangible infrastructure projects to boost economic output and improve citizens’ quality of life. These investments highlight the government’s commitment to decentralizing development and ensuring long-term sustainable progress.
