The government plans to go beyond the housing needs of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), where there is ongoing discussion to purchase another 230 acres of land, although the region is on course to solve its housing backlog by 2027.

Region Six recorded a housing backlog of 7,925 as at December 2025. At the beginning of 2026, some 292 house lots have been distributed, reducing the backlog to 7,633.

There are 1,100 other lots to be distributed at the moment, and 7,520 lots are under construction to satisfy the existing need.

In a recent live broadcast, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali indicated that the rate at which infrastructural development is taking place will ensure the backlog is eliminated in two years.

Even as work continues to address the current waiting list, government is already preparing for future population growth and housing demand.

The latest plans build on the government’s continued investment in housing development across Region Six.

In recent years, thousands of house lots have been allocated in communities including Palmyra, Williamsburg/Hampshire, Ordinance Fortlands, Moleson Creek and Number 79 Village, supported by investments in roads, drainage, water and electricity infrastructure to prepare new housing schemes for occupancy.

Additionally, there has been development in housing through the creation of turnkey and core houses, and infrastructure development geared toward the establishment of sustainable communities and homeownership opportunities for people living in East Berbice-Corentyne.

There have been efforts made in the past by the Ministry of Housing to open up new housing sites to keep pace with the growing demand.
