Young people in St Cuthbert’s Mission are set to benefit from new opportunities to develop their skills, build confidence and embrace healthy and active lifestyles following the launch of the President’s Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) programme there.

The programme was launched last Tuesday as part of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s efforts to expand access to structured youth development initiatives, particularly in hinterland communities.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr provided an overview of the programme, highlighting its focus on skills development, community service, physical training and the adventurous Journey.
Participants will progress through bronze, silver and gold levels as they develop their abilities and take part in the expedition experience.
The programme will also offer young people opportunities to participate in sports and recreational activities, including cricket, football, swimming, archery and volleyball.
The activities are designed to promote teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, leadership and personal development.
A key feature of the launch was the identification of unit leaders, coaches and facilitators from within the St Cuthbert’s Mission community.
They will work alongside the ministry to implement and guide the programme locally.

The minister said the involvement of community members reflects its commitment to strengthening local capacity and empowering communities to play a greater role in youth development.
The PYARG programme was resuscitated in 2021 after a period of inactivity under the previous administration and has since expanded across Guyana.
Between 2021 and July 2026, some 15,510 young people have been trained and participated in the programme.
