In a significant leadership update, the University of Guyana has announced the appointment of Professor Randolph Persaud as its new Pro Chancellor, following a decision by the institution’s 12th Council. His selection comes at a crucial time for the university as it aims to enhance its strategic direction, academic standards, and administrative stability.

With this appointment, Prof. Persaud will also assume the responsibilities of Acting Chancellor, ensuring a smooth leadership transition until a new Chancellor is officially appointed.

The announcement is a moment for reflection and deep appreciation for Professor John Edward Greene, whose term as Chancellor has concluded after years of visionary leadership. His guidance since 2019 has directed the university through major reforms and a shifting global academic landscape.

The University also recognized the unwavering dedication of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paloma Mohamed-Martin, who has assumed numerous leadership roles in recent years. Her service as Acting Chancellor and Pro Chancellor showcased her commitment to the institution and its goal of promoting a modern, forward-looking higher education environment for Guyana.

A Distinguished Scholar with a Global Legacy

Professor Persaud offers decades of international academic experience and strategic insight in his new role. With a distinguished career across universities in North America, Europe, and Asia, he is known for intellectual rigor, leadership, and transformative thinking.

He holds advanced degrees in Political Science from York University in Toronto. He has served as Professor Emeritus at American University in Washington, D.C., one of the world’s leading institutions for international affairs. His leadership roles include managing Comparative and Regional Studies at American University and contributing to prominent global think tanks and policy organizations.

In Guyana, Prof. Persaud currently serves as an advisor in the Office of the President, as the director of the National Defence Institute (NDI), and as a teaching fellow at the Institute for Human Resilience and Strategic Security at UG. His return to Guyana, following consistent contributions to national development and academic progress, has highlighted his international service.

A New Chapter for the University of Guyana

With Prof. Persaud now serving as Pro Chancellor, the University of Guyana begins a new chapter focused on expanding its scientific, technological, and problem-solving skills, as outlined in its national development plan. His leadership is expected to foster greater innovation, enhance global engagement, and improve academic standards to support Guyana’s rapid social and economic growth.

    Congratulations and Warm Wishes

The wider university community, along with partners and stakeholders across Guyana and the diaspora, has warmly congratulated Professor Randolph Persaud. His appointment is viewed as a positive, forward-looking step for the institution.

As the University of Guyana continues its mission to offer top-tier education and support national progress, Prof. Persaud’s experience, wisdom, and global perspective are expected to play a crucial role in shaping its future.

Congratulations to Prof. Randolph Persaud on this prestigious appointment, and best wishes for a successful and impactful tenure from everyone at Democracy Guyana. Dr. Randy Persaud frequently contributes articles to our online publication.
