Prime Minister Mark Phillips on Tuesday hailed Guyana’s internationally celebrated El Dorado brand as a symbol of national pride and excellence, as Demerara Distillers Limited unveiled a special limited-edition rum to mark the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

The commemorative launch took place at the Demerara Rum Heritage Museum, where the Prime Minister described the exclusive release as a tribute to Guyana’s remarkable journey since Independence and a reflection of the country’s resilience, culture and craftsmanship.

Addressing those gathered, Phillips described the anniversary blend as “liquid independence,” noting that the rum captures Guyana’s progress over the past six decades and embodies the pride and identity of the Guyanese people.

He said the release is far more than a premium spirit, explaining that every bottle carries the story of Guyana’s heritage, struggles and achievements over the years.

According to the Prime Minister, El Dorado has become one of Guyana’s most prominent global ambassadors, earning international respect and recognition while showcasing the country’s ability to produce world-class products.

He noted that wherever the brand is sold worldwide, it elevates Guyana’s image and demonstrates that a small nation can compete successfully on the global stage.

Phillips also emphasised the deep connection between Guyana’s rum and sugar industries, warning that challenges affecting sugar production could have serious implications for rum production, employment and foreign exchange earnings.

He stressed that rum production depends heavily on molasses from sugar, adding that the future of both industries remains closely linked.

The Prime Minister further encouraged Guyanese to support local industries by buying and promoting locally made products, emphasising that choosing Guyanese brands helps sustain important heritage industries and preserve national traditions.

Meanwhile, DDL Master Distiller Shaun Caleb explained that the anniversary blend was carefully crafted to reflect Guyana’s six peoples and the country’s rich distilling heritage.

Caleb revealed that the special edition rum blends six distinct rum marks, aged between 25 and 55 years, each from historic estates and with distinctive flavour profiles rooted in Guyana’s centuries-old rum-making traditions.

He described the release as a celebration of continuity, craftsmanship and cultural unity, blending rare, aged stocks with traditional distillation methods to produce what he called a truly exceptional expression of El Dorado rum.

Dr Komal Samaroo has played a transformative role in elevating El Dorado Rum into a globally recognised premium brand, proudly representing Guyana on the international stage. Through his vision, leadership and unwavering commitment, Guyanese products have gained greater visibility and respect across world markets.

Dr Samaroo remains one of the few corporate leaders in Guyana who has consistently dedicated himself to promoting local excellence internationally, and his contribution toward building Guyana’s global reputation through the success of El Dorado is truly unmatched.
