President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Sunday joined Indigenous communities and other Guyanese at the Drepaul’s Amerindian Heritage Day celebrations at Kuru Kururu along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The event formed part of the activities marking Amerindian Heritage Month and was held under the theme, “Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee: Honouring Our Traditions, Culture and Contributions.”
The celebration brought Guyana’s Indigenous heritage to the forefront, with traditional music, dances, food, crafts and other cultural expressions highlighting the richness and diversity of the country’s Indigenous communities.
President Ali interacted with residents, Indigenous leaders, cultural practitioners, families and other visitors who gathered for the occasion. Member of Parliament Alister Charlie was also present.
Throughout the event, participants showcased traditional practices and Indigenous products, offering visitors an opportunity to experience cultural traditions that have been preserved and passed from one generation to another.
Traditional foods also formed part of the celebrations, giving attendees a taste of culinary practices rooted in Guyana’s Indigenous heritage.
The occasion further highlighted the importance of safeguarding Indigenous languages, customs, traditional knowledge and cultural practices, particularly by ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their heritage.
Amerindian Heritage Month is observed annually in September and provides a national platform for recognising the contributions of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples while celebrating their history, identity and cultural traditions.
The Drepaul’s Amerindian Heritage Day activities at Kuru Kururu form part of the wider programme of events held across the country throughout the month.
