More than 100 cyclists took to Main Street on Sunday morning as President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali joined officials and participants in a bicycle ride marking the fourth anniversary of Men on Mission (MoM).
The event highlighted the initiative’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible fatherhood, encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen families and communities throughout Guyana.
President Ali completed two honorary laps with fellow riders before the main cycling activity began, lending his support to the programme’s focus on men’s health and positive male role models.
Addressing participants, the Head of State stressed that men must take a more active role in creating safe and supportive family environments. He also recognised the contributions of public and private sector partners, particularly members of the joint services, in advancing the initiative.
The President noted that while MoM’s housing assistance, feeding programmes, extra lessons and youth development activities provide direct support to vulnerable families, its wider mission is to encourage lasting changes in attitudes and behaviour.
He emphasised the importance of men helping to prevent violence against women and guiding boys and teenagers towards becoming responsible members of society.
Dr Ali also encouraged men over the age of 40 to prioritise their health by consulting doctors and taking advantage of available medical services for the early detection of illnesses.
Providing an update on the initiative’s progress, Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant Colonel Eon Murray said MoM has helped more than 160 families obtain homes built through the programme. A further 400-plus households have received materials to undertake repairs to their homes.
The initiative has also placed significant emphasis on children’s welfare, with approximately 150 children benefiting from weekday activities that include meals, mentorship and homework assistance.
Its outreach efforts have extended to correctional facilities, where incarcerated men are engaged while assistance is also provided to their children. The approach seeks to reduce the risk of harmful patterns continuing from one generation to the next.
The anniversary programme will continue with community clean-up exercises, mentorship sessions, youth outreach and other activities aimed at supporting vulnerable groups and strengthening family relationships.
Four years after its establishment, Men on Mission continues to focus on encouraging positive male leadership, improving family welfare and creating stronger, safer communities across Guyana.
