The first students are expected to be admitted to a new Hospitality and Tourism Institute by September 2027, as part of efforts to boost the country’s tourism sector.

The facility, located in Port Mourant, Region Six, is designed to train Guyanese for the country’s rapidly growing hospitality industry.

This is according to the Director of the Guyana Technical Training College, Professor Clement Sankat.

Construction is ongoing at the Tourism and Hospitality Institute in Port Mourant, Region Six

Guyana’s tourism sector has expanded significantly in recent years, with around 12 international hotels either under construction or preparing to open, Professor Sankat told the Department of Public Information(DPI)  during a recent interview

He said the rapid growth of hotels, eco-lodges, and resorts had created an urgent need for trained staff.

The institute will offer training in hotel management, front desk operations, reservations and billing, housekeeping, culinary arts, beverage services and cosmetology.

Training will also be provided in areas such as cosmetology, manicure, and pedicure.

The facility is also expected to include specialised training kitchens, laboratories, workshops and a restaurant-style environment where students will gain hands-on experience in food preparation and customer service.

According to Professor Sankat, programmes will range from short six-month courses to certificate and diploma programmes that equip students with internationally recognised skills.

Discussions are already underway with international partners to ensure graduates receive globally recognised qualifications.

Professor Sankat added that the institution is also engaging the Caribbean Tourism Organisation to help shape programmes that meet international tourism standards.
