It seemed that just when your Eyewitness thought the dust had finally settled on the eye-opening results of the September 1st elections, up popped one of the PNC’s more vocal youth leaders – PNC’s Resurrection Drama: From Chicken Man Campbell’s Divine Mission to restore the PNC party to its former racist glory. Annette Ferguson – declaring that “calls are mounting for Aubrey Norton to step aside and for a Special Congress to elect interim leadership until the 2026 Biennial Delegates Congress.” Clearly, the dust hasn’t settled at all. The fallout from the electoral defeat looks less like a dust-up and more like volcanic ash – and volcanic dust can take years to clear!!
Ferguson clearly believes that Leader Aubrey Norton should “take his licks like a man” – in the style of Nigel Hughes of the AFC – and resign. But instead of stepping down, Norton has doubled down. He’s appointed a new face – “Chicken Man” Terrence Campbell – to lead the 12 MPs remaining in Parliament after the PNC’s heavy defeat. Norton insists he’s committed to exactly what Ferguson is demanding: rebuilding the PNC by reaching out to women and youth; reorganizing through increased delegation; and shifting the party’s focus to be more people-centered. In short, the disagreement isn’t about whether a revival is needed – it’s about who will lead the PNC’s comeback.
Meanwhile, Norton’s handpicked parliamentary leader, Chicken Man Campbell, has carved out his own path. In a dramatic declaration, he announced: “I am a Christian, and Jesus led twelve who changed the world. The twelve who are going to Parliament are going to change Guyana!!” So there you have it. While Norton works on bringing back the sheep who strayed from the flock, Campbell, apparently inspired by a vision on the way to Congress Place, will be performing miracles inside the halls of Parliament!!
Since Campbell has portrayed the party’s fortunes as following a divine plan, Ferguson—who also likes to quote Scripture—might be expected to go along with the program. But here’s the real question: in this biblical analogy, who will take on the role of Judas? After all, Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, yet in doing so, he helped bring about the fulfillment of Jesus’ mission.
So, who’s going to betray Chicken Man Campbell to fulfill Norton’s mission? Could it be Black Pudding Man—who must be furious at being led by someone who doesn’t even understand politics. Ouch!
It appears that the PNC has become a born-again Christian party. Will we be preached to in Parliament about PNC Christian values instead of focusing on economic policies to improve the standard of living for all Guyanese? From Aubrey Norton’s racist policy against Indo-Guyanese to now Chicken Campbell’s 12 disciples, who claim they will bring miracles to the PNC party.
It appears to voters that our democracy has elected a gold smuggler as the leader of the opposition, and now Chicken Campbell is talking about the 12 disciples and his Christian values to transform Guyana through miracles.
What is happening to our democracy in Guyana? We must thank the majority of voters for voting for the PPP party, and with a majority of 36 seats in Parliament, we are in good hands to continue our economic progress.
