Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, November 8, 2025, flagged off four new Vande Bharat Express trains from his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi. The event was attended by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking another major milestone in India’s ongoing railway modernization drive. The newly inaugurated routes include Banaras–Khajuraho, Lucknow–Saharanpur, Firozpur Cantt–Delhi, and Ernakulam–Bengaluru, connecting significant cultural, industrial, and economic regions across the country.

The Prime Minister described these trains as symbols of a “new India” — fast, modern, and self-reliant — and part of a broader vision to transform Indian Railways under the Make in India initiative. With these additions, the total number of operational Vande Bharat trains across India has now surpassed 160. Each new route brings specific benefits: the Banaras–Khajuraho train enhances pilgrimage and heritage tourism by linking Varanasi, Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, and Khajuraho; the Lucknow–Saharanpur route reduces travel time across central and western Uttar Pradesh; the Firozpur–Delhi connection boosts trade and mobility in the northern region; while the Ernakulam–Bengaluru service improves business and commuter travel in South India.

These new trains promise faster travel, enhanced comfort, and better connectivity, reflecting India’s growing emphasis on semi-high-speed rail infrastructure. Beyond speed, the initiative aims to strengthen regional economies, encourage domestic tourism, and create a more efficient transport network for millions of passengers. While the launch represents a leap forward in technology and service quality, experts note that consistent maintenance, punctual operations, and affordable fares will be key to long-term success.

By choosing Varanasi as the venue, Prime Minister Modi reinforced his commitment to regional growth and modernization, especially in Uttar Pradesh. The flagging off of these four Vande Bharat Express trains signifies not just an expansion of India’s railway map but also a bold step toward a modern, connected, and self-reliant India.
