    – 166 homes completed for vulnerable families

The Men on Mission (MoM) initiative continues to positively impact communities through housing assistance, youth development programmes and community outreach activities, benefiting hundreds of vulnerable individuals and families nationwide.

Since its establishment, the initiative has expanded significantly. It now operates across all ten administrative regions, engaging volunteers, professionals, members of the joint services, private-sector partners and community members committed to national development.

In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Tuesday, National Coordinator of the Men on Mission Initiative, Lieutenant Colonel Bhageshwar Murli, said the programme has evolved into a national movement focused on improving lives and strengthening communities.

“Men on Mission has grown tremendously since its launch and continues to expand across all ten administrative regions. What started as a small initiative has now become a nationwide movement involving volunteers, professionals, members of the joint services, private sector partners and ordinary citizens who are passionate about community development,” Lieutenant Colonel Murli stated.

A major component of the initiative’s work has been providing housing support to vulnerable citizens.

To date, approximately 166 homes have been completed across Guyana, including 52 in 2024 and 114 in 2025.

In addition, approximately nine residential rehabilitation and restoration projects have been completed for vulnerable individuals and families.

The initiative has also provided building material assistance to hundreds of citizens. In 2024, 54 persons benefited from material support, while 303 persons received assistance in 2025. Thus far in 2026, an additional 50 persons have already benefited.

Beyond housing interventions, MoM has implemented a range of programmes to empower communities and improve social well-being.

Hundreds of persons have benefited from the initiative’s Youth Empowerment and Mentorship Programme (YEMP), wellness activities, orphanage visits, village outreaches, environmental projects and other community-based engagements.

The YEMP programme currently operates at several locations, including One Guyana Kitchen, the Regional Democratic Council compound in Lethem, the New Amsterdam Drop-in Centre and the Skeldon Line Path Community Centre Ground, providing academic support, mentorship, life-skills training and positive engagement opportunities for children and young people.

Lieutenant Colonel Murli explained that all requests for assistance are assessed through a structured process to ensure accountability and transparency.

“Every request received is carefully assessed through interviews, direct engagement and site visits to verify the circumstances and determine the level of assistance required. Our focus is to ensure that support reaches the persons who genuinely need it most while delivering measurable impact within communities,” he explained.

He noted that priority is given to vulnerable individuals and families, including senior citizens, persons living with disabilities, single parents, disaster-affected households and communities facing significant social and economic challenges.

The national coordinator also highlighted the critical role of partnerships in advancing the initiative’s work.

According to him, collaboration with government ministries, regional administrations, the joint services, private-sector entities, non-governmental organisations and volunteers has enhanced the initiative’s ability to deliver assistance and implement projects throughout the country.

The Men on Mission (MoM) initiative’s impact has also extended to remote communities, with beneficiaries receiving assistance in areas such as Awarewaunau Village in Region Nine, Orealla Village and Cashew Island in Region Six, among many other remote and riverine communities. These interventions reflect Men on Mission’s commitment to ensuring that support reaches vulnerable citizens regardless of their geographic location.

Looking ahead, Men on Mission intends to further expand its reach by increasing volunteer participation, strengthening community outreach efforts, broadening youth mentorship programmes and continuing to provide housing support for vulnerable citizens.

As the initiative continues to grow, it remains committed to fostering community development, empowering young people and improving the quality of life of citizens across Guyana.

This is an initiative birthed by his excellency President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali and chaired by Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, which started with the noble and compassionate intention to improve the lives of the vulnerable.
