The Local Content Secretariat, operating under the Ministry of Natural Resources, has recently unveiled significant procurement opportunities for Guyanese businesses and individuals offered by major oil and gas players. This move is part of the Secretariat’s efforts to ensure local enterprises are fully informed and positioned to benefit from the country’s thriving petroleum sector.
For the final quarter of 2024, Baker Hughes Guyana has announced procurement opportunities in several key areas, including maintenance and repair operations, construction work on buildings, provision of methanol and barite, calibration and inspection services, and rental of office space. These services are crucial to the company’s ongoing operations, and the participation of local suppliers is essential to their success.
In addition, G-Boats Inc. is offering a wide array of procurement opportunities for September, covering office supplies, general chandlery and supplies, PPE and safety equipment, transportation services, electrical and plumbing work, disposal services, accommodations, fittings, and customs brokerage services. This broad spectrum of services offers substantial opportunities for Guyanese businesses to engage with the company in various capacities.
KOTUG Guyana has also outlined a series of procurement opportunities that will be available over the coming months. Beginning in September, engineering and machining services will be in demand—both critical to the oil and gas sector and requiring technical expertise. Moving into October, opportunities will expand to include food supply services, which are vital for supporting the industry’s day-to-day operations.
In November, procurement opportunities will include customs brokerage services and ship and rig chandlery, both of which are essential for efficient logistical operations. By December, local businesses can look forward to a wide range of professional service opportunities, including workforce and crewing, medical, legal, insurance, and accounting services—opening possibilities for diverse sectors to engage with the oil industry.
Looking ahead to January 2025, opportunities will emerge in transportation services, admin support, and facilities management, followed by waste management and office rental space procurements in February 2025.
SLB Guyana has also announced an extensive list of procurement opportunities for local businesses over the next six months through the Local Content Secretariat. Among the notable services needed are inspection services, including advanced techniques such as visual inspection, magnetic particle inspection, pressure testing, and ultrasonic testing. These services are vital for ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of oil and gas projects, providing a valuable opportunity for local companies with technical expertise to contribute.
Additionally, SLB Guyana is seeking crew transportation services, including light-duty vehicles and minivans operated by qualified personnel. There is also a demand for staff house services, which will provide secure and comfortable living accommodations for employees, including security and housekeeping. These services are crucial in supporting the growing workforce in the oil sector, where housing and support services are vital in maintaining smooth operations.
Further procurement opportunities include crane rentals, maintenance, and workshop and office security services.
These opportunities align with the Local Content Law 2021 requirements, which mandates that companies operating in the petroleum industry prioritize procuring goods and services from Guyanese suppliers. As part of their compliance with the law, contractors and subcontractors are required to submit half-year reports to the Local Content Secretariat detailing their procurement activities, employment figures, and capacity-building efforts. This ensures transparency and accountability and supports the growth of a sustainable and inclusive local economy.
