As Guyana continues to grapple with the heartbreaking aftermath of the MV Barima disaster, Hindu communities across the country have gathered in prayer, offering spiritual support to victims, survivors, grieving families, and all affected by the tragedy.
Mandirs affiliated with the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha opened their doors to worshippers seeking solace and comfort, while special prayer services were held across several communities. The gatherings reflected a shared commitment to stand with those enduring unimaginable loss and to invoke divine blessings for healing, peace, and strength.
On the Essequibo Coast, devotees gathered at the Anna Regina Mandir for a solemn service in memory of those who perished. Prayers were offered for the departed’s eternal peace, the survivors’ recovery, and for families anxiously awaiting news of missing loved ones. The atmosphere was one of quiet reflection, with participants expressing solidarity through worship and prayer.
A similar service was held at the Spring Garden Bhuvaneshwar Mandir, with members of the Altruists Youth Group joining devotees for an evening of devotion. The congregation recited the sacred Hanuman Chalisa and prayed for the victims, their relatives, rescue personnel, medical teams, and all those affected by the tragedy.

Dr Vindhya Persaud, President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, took part in prayers at the Shri Krishna Mandir, where she delivered a message of national unity and compassion. She emphasised that the thoughts and prayers of the entire country remain with the families who have suffered unimaginable loss, and urged citizens to continue supporting those affected during this difficult period.
Throughout the services, devotees lit traditional diyas, offered flowers, and observed moments of silent reflection. Religious leaders reminded worshippers that although grief cannot be erased, faith, compassion, and collective support can offer comfort and hope to those bearing the burden of loss.
They also encouraged communities to offer practical assistance and emotional support to bereaved families, emphasising that acts of kindness and solidarity are as important as prayers in helping people navigate such painful circumstances.
The nationwide observances highlighted the unity of Guyana’s Hindu community, with mandirs welcoming people from all backgrounds to join in remembrance and prayer. The services served not only as a tribute to those who lost their lives but also as a powerful reminder that, in moments of national tragedy, compassion and togetherness remain among the country’s greatest strengths.
