As government efforts continue to support survivors and families affected by the MV Barima tragedy, the private partners are stepping up to strengthen those initiatives.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW), in partnership with the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), donated $25 million to the Hope, Empathy, Aid, Resilience and Trust (HEART) Initiative on Saturday.

The donation was presented during the closing ceremony of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League at the National Stadium in Providence.

The HEART Initiative was established by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to provide long-term support to survivors and families affected by the July 18 MV Barima tragedy.

It brings together humanitarian assistance, psychosocial and trauma counselling, social services, spiritual guidance and other forms of care to help families heal and rebuild.

President Ali has made it clear that the initiative is not intended as financial compensation. Instead, it represents the nation’s commitment to standing with survivors and bereaved families throughout their recovery.

The president also announced the establishment of a national body, comprising respected religious and civil society leaders, to oversee and coordinate the initiative.

He also called on citizens, organisations and the private sector to support the HEART Initiative as the country continues to respond to one of Guyana’s deadliest maritime disasters.

The $25 million contribution fulfils an agreement between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League to donate all proceeds from ticket sales for the tournament final towards educational and humanitarian assistance for families and individuals affected by the MV Barima tragedy.

The MV Barima, a passenger and cargo vessel, capsized off the Essequibo Coast on July 18, 2026, claiming dozens of lives and leaving many families devastated.

The government has since mobilised a comprehensive response, including humanitarian relief, counselling services and long-term recovery support through the HEART Initiative.
