Guyana, Qatar deepen agricultural cooperation with technology-focused agreement

GUYANA and Qatar are strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing agricultural technology and promoting more sustainable and innovative farming practices.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Hilton Todd and Qatar’s Minister of Municipality, His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration in agricultural technology, with emphasis on the application of modern technologies to promote sustainable agricultural development and strengthen the capacity of the agricultural sectors in both countries.

The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s State Visit to Qatar from September 6 to 10, which provided an opportunity for both countries to deepen high-level engagement and identify new areas for cooperation.

During the visit, President Ali held official talks with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, at the Amiri Diwan.

The discussions focused on strengthening relations between Guyana and Qatar and expanding opportunities for bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

Minister Todd accompanied President Ali throughout the state visit and participated in several engagements aimed at advancing Guyana’s international partnerships.

As part of the visit, Guyana also marked its 60th Independence Anniversary at a special celebration hosted by Guyana’s Ambassador to Qatar, Safraaz Shadood, and the Guyana Embassy in Doha, under the theme “Building Guyana’s Global Brand.”

The event highlighted Guyana’s people, products and expanding opportunities for international trade and investment.

Guyana’s commercial presence in Qatar was further strengthened with the launch of the Guyanese UMAMI product line in the Qatari market, providing an additional platform to showcase locally produced goods and promote the country’s growing commercial potential.

During the official talks at the Amiri Diwan, His Highness Sheikh Tamim welcomed President Ali and the Guyanese delegation and expressed the hope that the visit would contribute to further strengthening relations and expanding opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

The new agricultural agreement is expected to provide a platform for greater collaboration in modern farming technologies while supporting efforts to make agriculture more sustainable and innovative.

Guyana and Qatar established diplomatic relations on August 23, 1996, and have continued to strengthen bilateral ties through high-level engagements and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
