More than 20,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance at this year’s GT Challenge de las Américas, as Guyana prepares to host one of the region’s premier motorsport events on July 11 and 12 at the South Dakota Circuit.
Following an inspection of the venue, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs expressed satisfaction with the progress of works.
He described the preparations as advanced for the highly anticipated race weekend.
“I am very pleased with what I have seen. The Ministry of Public Works has carried out extensive work to ensure the track is ready for the GT Challenge de las Américas. The organisers have also done an exceptional job in planning this event,” Minister Jacobs said.

He noted that the government is working closely with the motorsport community to deliver an unforgettable experience for competitors, spectators and visitors alike.
“This is a major event, and we want to ensure everything is in place so people can come out in their numbers and enjoy the GT Challenge de las Américas,” he stated.
The excitement will extend far beyond the race circuit.
Minister Jacobs said his ministry is preparing a cultural showcase that will place Guyana’s rich heritage at the heart of the event, giving visitors an authentic taste of the country’s traditions and creativity.

“You will see Guyanese culture on full display. We are proud to showcase our country as we continue to host major international sporting events and strengthen Guyana’s reputation as a sporting destination,” he said.
The build-up to the race weekend will also feature a parade of GT race cars through Georgetown, live art displays on Main Street, and the Taste of Guyana experience, where patrons can enjoy local cuisine and cultural attractions.
Minister Jacobs said the event represents far more than high-speed racing. He noted that it is expected to generate significant economic opportunities for businesses while reinforcing Guyana’s growing sports tourism sector.
“I was informed that more than 83,000 people are expected to view this event (online), and I believe that number will continue to grow. We are using sport to drive tourism, create economic opportunities and showcase Guyana to the world,” he said.
With roaring GT race cars capable of reaching speeds in excess of 270 kilometres per hour, a vibrant cultural programme and a global audience expected, the GT Challenge de las Américas is set to deliver an unforgettable weekend while further cementing Guyana’s emergence as a premier destination for international sports tourism.
