Guyana’s electricity capacity has been further strengthened with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Global South Utilities Power Enterprises Investment LLC (GSU) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The strategic agreement was signed by the head of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) executive management committee, Kesh Nandlall, and GSU CEO, Ali Abdulla Ali Mohamed Alshimmari, on Friday.

The partnership seeks to establish a framework for cooperation in power generation, renewable energy, and smart electricity infrastructure.
It further aligns with GPL’s ambitious electricity development plan. The plans aim to improve service reliability and resilience, increase generation capacity, and integrate innovative technologies to meet the country’s rapidly growing energy demand.
Nandlall said the agreement is an important milestone in GPL’s continued transformation.
“This partnership with Global South Utilities creates opportunities to leverage international expertise, innovative technologies and strategic investments that will help accelerate the delivery of our development plan and ultimately provide a more reliable and efficient electricity service for the people of Guyana,” Nandlall said.

GPL and GSU will collaborate to identify, evaluate, and develop projects in the power and energy sector.
The agreement provides for joint feasibility studies and the exploration of financing, technical cooperation, and implementation strategies for future projects, with individual initiatives to be governed by separate definitive agreements.
It is also expected to play a key role in advancing renewable energy integration.
